August 5 - I’m Dropping Out of School to Become a Dancer

Although I wasn’t out that late, I still woke up feeling it. I did however force myself out of bed to enjoy some free hotel breakfast before heading out for one of the coolest things ever. Since we were able to pick extra excursions for the class, I thought it would be a fun idea to take a Spanish dance class while we were here. I had spent a few days coordinating the class and messaging back and forth to make it happen. But I was successful and everything ran smoothly. Since it was a last minute thing not everyone could make it but those of us who were able to make it, we had the best time. The small group of us took a metro over to the class to meet up with our instructor. We all dressed in comfy clothes and came prepared for a fun morning.

The instructor was so sweet. She was patient with us as she taught us the basics of flamenco dance, practiced the rhythms necessary, and even had us learn a dance in the span of an hour. It was an absolute blast. We danced and smiled and just enjoyed something unlike anything else we’ve done on this trip. I am by no means the best dancer but I love to dance and so this was truly one of the best things I have done on this trip. I wish I could go to dance classes all the time and just have this physical form of expression and do something with so much passion and love. We danced around and had the best time until the class ended. The instructor ended by showing off her skills and wow she was amazing. We were all in awe of her abilities and I am sure that she has put so much time and love into her craft.

Once our class ended, a few of us went out to enjoy our last weekend in the city. We ended up at a flea market and enjoyed this unique side of the city. I loved looking through the vintage items and people watching as we explored the piles of things. I didn’t end up buying anything but I loved looking at everything there. I was pretty hungry afterwards though so a classmate and I went to grab some acai bowls since that has been one of my biggest cravings of the past few days. I love them so much back in town so this helped to satiate one of the things I had been starting to miss. Another thing I was in need of was some alone time. I love being with my classmates all the time but my social battery was at a low so I needed time to myself.

I went back to the hotel, grabbed my swimsuit, and decided to go to the beach for a few hours. I took the bus over and found a nice spot on the Sant Miquel beach. I promise that I made sure to send my location to my friends and I was safe the entire time. I just laid in the sand, played a little bit in the water, and found lots of pretty rocks to take back home with me. I needed this time to just refresh to last me the next few days of the trip. Once I started to get tired of the beach, I went to a nearby restaurant that I liked so I could get a drink and some of my favorite tapas. I ate alone but I really do love taking myself on dates. I got to people watch as I ate some patatas braves and drank some tinto de verano. It was only a few hours but I appreciated the little bit of peace that I had so desperately needed.

I took the bus back towards the hotel and along the way I ran into a large group of my classmates. They were all headed to dinner and invited me to join. I wasn’t super hungry but I wanted to tag along anyway so we all went to an adorable Asian restaurant. We were able to sit in our own private room as we shared plates and talked about the trip. One of my favorite parts of the trip has been the relationships I have formed with my classmates. We have truly made some incredible memories together and I know these bonds will last us a lifetime.

After dinner, we all clamored into my hotel room for another website grind night. I didn’t have the dorm experience this year so having late night work sessions with my friends has been a fun time. I love this trip and I love all of the incredible memories I am making here.
